CCMA Virtouso Series presents Verdi's 'La Traviata' from Jenny Kelly Productions. La Traviata, which literally means "The Woman Who Strayed," is based on the novel La Dame aux Camelias by Alexandre Dumas. The classic opera was first performed on March 6th, 1853, in Venice, and it was an utter failure! It was later revised in 1856 and presented at Her Majesty's Theatre in London, followed later that year with a premiere in New York. Verdi had faith that his creation would be successful with time. Verdi was correct. The popularity of this opera has spanned almost 16 decades. La Traviata is third on Opera America's list of the 20 most-performed operas in North America.
Briefly, the story is of courtesan Violetta Valery and her ardent affair with young nobleman Alfredo Germont. The plot is full of ups and downs and the conflict between social classes seems to have no resolution.
Teatra Lirico D'Europa is the most successful opera touring company in Europe and the U.S. As the decade changes to 2010 they will have accrued 11 consecutive seasons of tours with more than 3,000 performances worldwide. It is the only touring opera company with a full orchestra of 47-50 members, a chorus of 40 singers, dancers when needed and outstanding professional vocal soloists from the major opera houses of Europe and the U.S.
