When rock star and teenage heartthrob Conrad Birdie gets drafted into the Army, the nation’s teenagers go haywire and Conrad’s songwriter, Albert, faces unemployment. So Albert and his girlfriend organize a nationwide contest in which one lucky girl wins a farewell kiss from Conrad on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Kim McAfee turns out to be the lucky girl and Conrad’s whole entourage moves into her quiet Midwestern home...much to the chagrin of her irritable father and her jealous boyfriend.
The result is chaos and a series of romantic complications. Anyway, the endings are happy, and it’s really all about the music that ties the various plots together. Well-known songs such as “A Lot of Livin’ to Do,” “Put on a Happy Face,” and “One Last Kiss,” are a sampling of the memorable, singable tunes written by Charles Strouse, Michael Stewart (book) and Lee Adams. Bye Bye Birdie actually launched the careers of composer, Strouse, and lyricist, Adams. |
